Publish a Poem Project 2017

Teachers, parents and pupils convened last Tuesday night on 30th May, at the Garage Theatre Monaghan, to celebrate the successes of this year’s “Publish A Poem” competition. The Project Coordinator Wendy Flood, explained how the project has developed from the annual “Write A Book”  project, into exploring poetic forms, letter writing and short stories, many of these leading to local publication of acclaimed work by pupils in the county.

Jimmy McGeough, Director of the Monaghan Education Centre introduced Pat Deery of the Monaghan Rotary Club, and thanked the Rotary Club for its sponsorship of the event. Pat commended the hard work of the Teachers involved in the project, and praised the standard of work shown by these new authors, whose work has now been published in a new poetry anthology entitled “The Drumlins Speak In Verse”.

An unprecedented number of schools took part in this year’s literacy project, and only a small percentage of these participants were invited to the Garage Theatre to collect their winners awards. Because of the huge number of winners, there were two presentation ceremonies on the night, and these were attended by teachers, parents and pupils. More than 200 Merit Medals were awarded on the night, along with 40 awards for Exceptional poems in the categories of Best Acrostic, Best Non-Fiction, Best Limerick, Best Haiku, Best Cinquain, Best Ode and Best Free Verse. All these winners were selected by teachers for having produced an extra-special poem within its form. All Merit winners received a copy of  “The Drumlins Speak In Verse”. An additional 500 pupils received runners-up prizes of Highly Commended” medals for their poems.

Thanks to all the staff at R&S Printers who produced a fantastic book which sold out on the night, to the staff at the Garage Theatre who made the evening such a well-organised and special event, and to all the staff at Monaghan Education Centre for their support and help with the project.

Congratulations to all the Pupils in the following schools who participated in the Project. Keep reading and writing your own poems, express yourselves and share your vision and ideas with others!
