SUPERVISION FOR GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS
Considerations for the appointment of Supervisors
In 2001, preliminary discussions took place between Mr Seamus McDermott Director of MonaghanEducation Centre, and Ms. Kathleen Brennan Inspector of Guidance D.E.S., with a view to setting up supervision for Guidance Counsellors. It was decided to approach Mr Vincent Wrynn Principal Officer I.C.D.U. for funding to set up Supervision for Guidance Counsellors in the North East Branch of I.G.C. as a pilot programme.
The I.C.D.U. agreed and four Centres were set up i.e. one in Monaghan, Cavan, Dundalk and Navan. The Project was administrated from Monaghan Education Centre. As a result of the success of this Pilot the National President of I.G.C. Mr Brian Mooney successfully negotiate sufficient funding to extend Supervision for Guidance counsellors to all the Branches nationally. Dr. Paul Ryan Principal Officer of T.E.S. agreed that this National Project would be administrated by Monaghan Education Centre and that a National Steering Committee would be established to oversee the Project on an ongoing basis.
An ethics sub Committee of the I.G.C. was established under the chairmanship of Mr Arthur Dunne, Fellow of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors, to ensure quality control. The National Programme has been running very successfully for the past year and a half. Each Branch of the I.G.C. has appointed one of its members to organise the sessions locally most of which are run in the Local Education Centres.
