Write a Book Project 2010
Monaghan Education Centre hosted its Annual “Write A Book Presentation Evening” on Wednesday 9th June 2010 at the Hillgrove Hotel, Monaghan. At this successful evening, over a hundred proud pupils from across County Monaghan were in attendance, along with their teachers and parents.
Jimmy McGeough, Director of Monaghan Education Centre welcomed the young authors, their teachers and parents and congratulated the pupils on their hard work in each producing their own books which had been classed as “Merit” award winners. All pupils were called to the podium by Wendy Flood, co-ordinator of the project and the children were presented with medals and certificates to mark their achievements. As each pupil came forward to collect their medals, the front cover of their book was displayed for all to see on the large screen behind the stage.
Over the Spring Term at schools across the county, over a thousand pupils and teachers from over twenty schools worked diligently on writing their own books. This process of writing includes careful planning, editing, drafting and re-drafting by pupils themselves, in order to produce a well considered and interesting piece of writing which is then copied up into a personally bound book. Specialist vocabulary, character description and plot twists have to be considered. Often pupils work together to positively critique each others’ work, evaluating what has been written and helping to ensure the story reads well, characters are well defined and locations are described clearly.
Teachers across the county took on the task of reading books submitted to the project, awarding the Highly Commended and Merit awards. All pupils, whose work was awarded “Merit or Highly Commended” status, received a medal and certificate. In addition, every child who submitted a book received a certificate recognising their efforts as young Authors.
To summarise, it is not only the pupils who attended the presentation evening who should be commended, but all pupils and teachers who took part, as well as the parents who have encouraged and supported their children in their journeys to become authors. Well done!
