Enhancing the Multi-class Learning Environment

Dear Colleague,

As we all know County Monaghan has a very high proportion of schools where teachers teach in a multi class situation. We now wish to put in place a project to help these teachers in their work in schools. We wish to target schools that have either 2 or 3 mainstream teachers. The aim would be to provide professional development to teachers in multi-class environments, whilst endeavouring to address some of the challenges of this unique working environment.

Teachers invited from schools in the Monaghan Education Centre area will be afforded an opportunity to engage in focused Professional Development during which, with the support of relevant expertise, issues relating to teaching in a multi-class context will be explored.

The broad aims of this developmental project may be summarised as follows

  • To promote dialogue between teachers around the issue of teaching in multi-class environments and to share best practice.
  • To develop collegiality and partnership
  • To draw on available expertise in a mutually supportive environment
  • To provide a conduit through which existing supports/resources can be devolved to build capacity at a local level.

As the result of an identified need emerging from the project PPDS, in conjunction with Monaghan Education Centre, will endeavour to facilitate the multi-class teacher through the provision of a Support Programme.  The Programme is focussed on the needs of the participating teachers and schools. It is hoped that the group would meet on a monthly basis. Not all 2 and 3 teacher schools in the county can be accommodated on the programme. Priority will be given to schools where whole staffs wish to participate. However if there are places still available individual teachers may be accommodated. Please contact Monaghan Education Centre as soon as possible or in any event no later than Friday 4th December if you wish to participate in the project.

An information evening will be held to give further information and seek the views of schools and identify their needs. The arrangements for this information session is as follows.

Venue:Monaghan Education Centre,

Date: Tuesday December 9th

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Yours sincerely,

Jimmy McGeough,
