Embedding Tolerance in our Young People Project
The ‘Embedding Tolerance in our Young People’ project aims to address issues of diversity, racism and sectarianism in Monaghan schools so as to promote a culture of tolerance in our schools and young people.
The project is founded upon a belief that “…integration starts with individual schools educating their pupils to be enlightened critical thinkers and well-balanced individuals, prepared for the responsibilities and obligations of life in a civilised and democratic society” (Report of the Independent Strategic Review of Education: 2006 - Northern Ireland). The project partners feel that schools are ideally placed to address the challenges faced by Irish society in relation to peace and cultural acceptance.
Two working groups comprising teachers at primary and post-primary level will be established to research and develop programmes of learning which will help children and young people to identify, understand and discuss obstacles to tolerance in our community.
By engaging genuinely motivated and committed teachers from Monaghan schools, the project will devise a programme specifically tailored to the needs of the local community.
In addition to extending the knowledge and understanding of religious and cultural differences within schools, the project will promote interaction between schools thereby further reducing religious, social and cultural barriers and promoting positive cooperative relationships at all levels.
